Teeth Whitening

Having white teeth is a desire that extends across the population of many developed countries/Many people across the world want to have whiter teeth. For more than 30 years, the Vilaboa Dental Clinic has been a pioneer of teeth whitening techniques in Spain.

Our team of experts use the latest whitening gels that not only whiten the enamel but also increase the microhardness of the enamel thanks to a remineralisation process, in turn achieving a dental treatment without sensitivity.

Causes of teeth discoloration

There are many factors that prevent people from having white teeth: without a doubt taking antibiotics such as tetracycline is one of the most significant causes of severe discoloration of the teeth. Today, tetracycline is not prescribed to young children but we are still treating this type of discoloration in patients who are 30 years old or more. In severe cases of tetracycline discoloration, sometimes it is necessary to treat these patients with a combination of teeth whitening and veneers or porcelain crowns.

Other causes of tooth discoloration include excessive amounts of fluoride (Fluorosis), smoking, and dyeing/discoloration as a result of colouring in food and drink (coffee, tea, wine, saffron)

Dental ageing (whether premature or not) teeth grinding or bruxism, or dental trauma can also lead to the discoloration of the teeth.

What is a teeth whitening treatment?

The best treatment for the patient in many cases is the most conservative and quite often the least invasive. This is the reason why the result of whitening is so appealing.
Whitening can be done in the clinic through the application of a whitening gel that is placed on the surface of the tooth. The gums are protected with a gum shield. This gel starts to work and its activity is enhanced by the energy it receives from a light source than can be any of the following: plasma light, halogen light, and in some cases, laser. The type of light used for the treatment depends on each individual case.

Alternatively, teeth whitening can be done at home or by means of a combination of clinic sessions and at-home treatment by applying a different type of whitening gel in a customized flexible mould. The patient can wear this mould on average for two hours a day. The length of this treatment varies according to each patient but it can take between two to three weeks.

Once the whitening treatment is complete, we recommend that the patient continues to brush their teeth at home with a new generation toothpaste.
