Oral Surgery

The removal of of third molars, also known as wisdom teeth, is the most frequent treatment in oral surgery. The reason for extraction may be a lack of space, pain, infection, or a crowding of the anterior teeth because of the pathway of eruption of the wisdom teeth. It is therefore quite common to remove third molars. Oftentimes, it is indicated by the orthodontist in order to prevent such issues.

In general, removing wisdom teeth is simple, many times even simpler than an extraction of any other tooth. It is very rare for a patient not to be able to work or keep doing a routinely activity straight after the procedure. In general, patients suffer from mild discomfort for a few days.

The extraction of teeth other than third molars is also a very frequent procedure. The main principle when performing any surgical act is being as least traumatizing as possible, which in return means less discomfort and pain for the patient in order to have a better recovery process. One of the procedures that we perform at Clinica Vilaboa is the use of autologous Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) in order to enhance the outcome of our surgeries. This procedure consists in the extraction of a small amount of blood from the patient, which is immediately thereafter centrifuged, and the fraction of the clot which contains the highest number of platelets is used on the surgical site. These platelets contain a great number of growth factors, which allow for a faster and more complete healing of bony and soft tissue wounds. PRP has also been proven to diminish post-operatory inflammation and pain. The main goal within our team at Clinica Vilaboa is to keep and improve oral health, and to treat the pathologies which may occur on teeth, gums, bone or any other structure related to the oral function.
